The government will work to strengthen freedom of speech and democratic process: Dr. Yunus

The chief adviser of the interim government. Muhammad Yunus announced that his government is committed to strengthening the democratic process and freedom of speech for all in society, including the youth. He expressed this promise in a briefing with ambassadors, high commissioners and heads of various international organizations including the United Nations in a five-star hotel in the capital on Sunday (August 18).

Dr. Yunus, meanwhile, expressed concern over the deterioration of the judiciary, democracy and voting rights under Sheikh Hasina's regime, which he termed as a result of authoritarian attitudes. According to him, the main objective of the interim government is to ensure law and order and hold a participatory election, which will reflect the will of the people.

Expressing regret for joining late, he said the government's priority is to maintain peace in the country and reform the country according to the needs of the young generation. Besides, he welcomed the United Nations investigation team into the killings that took place in July and promised to provide all possible cooperation in the full investigation of the incident.

Dr. Yunus also mentioned that his government will give special importance to protecting the rights of minorities and solving the Rohingya crisis. Calling for the continued cooperation of the United Nations in the Rohingya repatriation process, he said that international cooperation is very important to solve this crisis.
